Arsenal 2 Burnley 1: Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang scores winner as Dani Ceballos shines on full debut

You have to go back a decade to find the last time Arsenal started a Premier League season quite like this.

Two games played and two wins secured, with Arsenal wrapping up their second victory of the campaign here against Burnley.

Like last week against Newcastle, Unai Emery’s side were made to work for their three points against a Burnley side who provided stubborn resistance.

However goals from Alexandre Lacazette and Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang were enough to claim the win, with only Ashley Barnes’ strike blotting the hosts’ copybook.

It means they have now won both of their opening league games for the first time since 2009 and there is a growing mood of optimism around the Emirates.

Dani Ceballos’ bright performance on his first start for the club is one of the reasons behind that, while Arsenal’s late flurry in the transfer window has also lifted spirits.

One of those deadline day signings, David Luiz, was handed his debut against Burnley as Emery made three changes from the team that won at Newcastle.

Out went Calum Chambers, Granit Xhaka and Henrikh Mkhitaryan and in came Luiz, Ceballos and Lacazette. All three helped Arsenal get off to a bright start and within 13 minutes they were ahead.

Ceballos whipped in a corner from the left and Lacazette brought it down at the near post, before spinning his marker and firing it through Burnley goalkeeper Nick Pope’s legs.

It was no more than the Gunners deserved and they dominated possession throughout the first-half, with Ceballos running the show and Reiss Nelson going close to doubling their lead.

Burnley, though, still carried a threat going forward and they duly got back on level terms two minutes before the break.

Winger Dwight McNeil hit a shot from outside the box and, when it deflected off Sokratis, it fell perfectly into the path of Barnes to score.

That spurred Arsenal into life and they thought they were instantly back ahead just before half-time, but Nelson’s strike was ruled out as Nacho Monreal was offside when he cut the ball back to him.

That proved to be Nelson’s last contribution as he was subbed at half-time for club-record signing Nicolas Pepe. It was an indication of Emery’s intent and sure enough Arsenal came out flying for the second half.

Twice Aubameyang went close as he first fired an effort just wide of the post, before drawing a good save from Pope moments later.

However, the forward was not to be denied a third time and he restored Arsenal’s lead in the 64th minute with a lovely goal.

Picking the ball up from outside the box Aubameyang sprinted towards the area, skipping past defender James Tarkowski and arrowing a strike into the bottom corner.

It was the Gabon international’s ninth goal in his last seven games and suddenly the tension around the Emirates lifted.

Now what the home fans craved was a third goal to ease their fears over seeing the game out, but Burnley refused to lie down and almost levelled through McNeil’s header.

Arsenal held on, though, to claim a second win in as many games as they went top of the league - if only for a few hours.
