ARSENAL
Petr Cech 7/10
The biggest positive for Arsenal will be how routine their new signing’s work looked. He offers a contagious confidence
Héctor Bellerín 5/10
Got forward often but his ball retention was suspect at times, particularly in the opening half. Such carelessness would often be punished
Laurent Koscielny 7/10
A solid presence, keeping Rémy and then Falcao on the periphery, even if both were off the pace. Made a game-high 16 clearances
Per Mertesacker 7/10
Marshalled the defence well and seems to relish playing at Wembley. Collided with Hazard early on in the box but play continued
Nacho Monreal 6/10
Firm if unspectacular performance. Attacked on occasion and did a good job keeping Willian quiet throughout the opening period
Francis Coquelin 7/10
Broke up play well and kept the attacking strands of Chelsea’s midfield quiet, shielding the centre-halves. Passed well. Booked
Santi Cazorla 7/10
Crafty and calm, he was the most likely to pick out a killer pass but also missed a good chance late in the game, denied by a stretching Courtois
Aaron Ramsey 7/10
Tidy and neat. Has had greater impact at Wembley but distributed the ball well and worked hard without possession when required
Mesut Özil 5/10
Questions remain over how much of an impact he can have against the big teams. Tried hard but lacking an explosiveness
Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain 8/10
Troubled the Chelsea defence with his pace and his finish was sublime. Gave an indication here that he could be a crucial cog this season
Theo Walcott 6/10
Given the nod instead of Giroud but apart from cleverly dropping deep in the buildup to the goal was largely anonymous
Substitutes
Giroud (for Walcott, 66); Arteta (for Oxlade-Chamberlain, 78); Gibbs (for Özil, 82)
Not used Martínez, Debuchy, Gabriel, Iwobi
CHELSEA
Thibaut Courtois 7/10
Little he could have done to stop the goal and apart from that dealt with everything that came his way without much trouble. Steady
Branislav Ivanovic 6/10
That the most noticeable element of his performance were a succession of long throw-ins says much. Lacked a certain sharpness
Gary Cahill 6/10
Left with a bloodied nose after a ferocious tackle early on. Kept Walcott on a tight leash apart from when he dropped deep for the goal
John Terry 7/10
Largely comfortable and had no real role in the concession. Sacrificed late on for Moses. Still had a look of disgust on his face at the end
César Azpilicueta 5/10
Left to chase Oxlade-Chamberlain’s shadow for the goal and was troubled by the Arsenal player’s pace. Also picked up a yellow card
Nemanja Matic 6/10
Had a quiet game and was outshone by the combativity of his opposite number Coquelin. Did not do much wrong but lacked influence
Cesc Fàbregas 5/10
Apart from a delicious pass to Hazard in the second half, never really got going, though also denied decent supply for large spells
Ramires 5/10 Missed a great chance in the first half, heading Rémy’s cross over from close range. Taken off early in the second half. Has had better days
Willian 7/10 Provided a couple of decent passes for Rémy in the first half but found it tricky to get past Monreal, who offered him little space to run into
Eden Hazard 6/10
Lethargic for the most part and lacking a degree of sharpness. Spurned a glorious opportunity in the second half, firing over Cech’s bar
Loïc Rémy 4/10
Ineffective and seemed to be almost perpetually offside. Little surprise he was hooked at half-time, though Falcao was not much better
Substitutes
Falcao (for Rémy, h-t); Oscar (for Ramires, 54); Zouma (for Azpilicueta, 69); Moses (for Terry, 82)
Not used Begovic, Cuadrado, Mikel
