As a harbinger of autumn, the kochia bushes at Hitachi Seaside Park in Hitachinaka, Ibaraki Prefecture, have turned a brownish yellow green, the first stage in their transformation into balls of flaming red. About 32,000 of the plants, also known as summer cypress or burning bush, carpet a 1.9-hectare field in the park. The park was temporarily closed from mid-August due to the pandemic but reopened on Sept. 20.
