Arrests, warnings and and fines: what happens when you breach fire ban

A WARNING to a nine-year-old boy is the latest of several alleged breaches of the NSW total fire ban that police and firefighters have dealt with since Monday afternoon amid tinderbox conditions.

Police gave a 27-year-old man a $2200 fine at Wallacia on Monday afternoon after the man lit a fire at Fowler Reserve to make cups of tea.

Firefighters and police immediately attended and extinguished the flames.

Later Monday evening, Rural Fire Service volunteers called police to a Braidwood Drive property at Prestons after reports of a man burning fence pailings in a barbecue.

Embers from the fire fell and ignited a secondary fire, police said.

The 35-year-old man was given a $2200 infringement for failing to comply with the total fire ban.

About 5am on Tuesday, when much of the state faced conditions firefighters classified as catastrophic, police will allege a 46-year-old man lit a fire in a small barbecue in Lalor Park.

The man was arrested for failing to comply with a total fire ban order and breach of bail. He was due to face court on Tuesday.

At Worrigee about 11.35am, a grass fire broke out in Sullivan Street. A boy, 9, subsequently made admissions to lighting the fire with a blowtorch when he was with a group of other children.

"Due to the child's age, he was issued a warning under the Young Offenders Act," police said.

The fire ban will extend into Wednesday and restricts any type of fire out in the open. General purpose hot works such as welding, grinding or gas cutting or any activity that produces a spark or flame are not to be done in the open.

Anyone who sees suspicious or illegal behaviour is urged to contact police via Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000 or https://nsw.crimestoppers.com.au
