Arrests made after 'shocking' party scenes in Kilkee, Co Clare

A number of people have been arrested after party scenes in Clare at the weekend.

Droves of young people gathered in Kilkee in a mass gathering that has been labelled as "shocking" by a local councillor.

Gardai were called to the gathering late on Saturday night dispersing the crowd and making a number of arrests.

A garda spokesperson said: "Gardaí in Clare responded to reports of large gatherings along the Strandline in Kilkee, Saturday evening, 2 August 2020.

"There were several public order incidents and a number of arrests were made by Gardaí. No serious injuries have been reported. Investigations are continuing into this matter."

Footage of the gathering has been widely circulated on social media since.

Local councillor Cillian Murphy called for parents to know where their children are at all times slamming the event.

In a social media post Councillor Murphy said: "If you are in Kilkee, the parents of a teenager, and you didn’t know where they were last night then this is for you.

"I’m living in Kilkee for over 30 years and I cannot ever remember this sort of behavior on anything like this scale before.

"I have been up since 6:30 this morning dealing with the consequences of last nights “event”, helping our ground crew pick up the litter, smashed glass, tidying up the vandalized shelters etc.

"By 8am they had the worst of it sorted but it really had to be seen to be believed.

"I have seen a number of videos from last night posted publicly on other social media feeds and the behavior on display is truly shocking.

"I have also been on to the Gardaí this morning asking for a significant allocation of extra resources up to and including the public order unit for the future.

"The bandstand and it’s surrounds will be blocked off by CCC on public health grounds this evening at 6pm. I can only ask that parents know where their teenage children are at all times this evening."
