Arrests after train inspector suffers head injuries during assault

A train inspector suffered head injuries following an alleged assault in Great Victoria Street Station.

PSNI officers were called to the incident in the train station off Glengall Street, in Belfast City Centre on Friday night following reports that a Translink worker had been assaulted by two men.

The train inspector in his 60s was allegedly kicked and punched in the head.

Two men aged 24 and 28 were arrested following the incident on suspicion of a number of offences, including assault occasioning actual bodily harm and criminal damage.

They have since been released on bail pending further investigations.

Sergeant Rooney said: “At around 11:20pm, we received a report that a male member of staff had been assaulted within a bus centre in the area. 



“The victim sustained head injuries, after being punched several times. 

“The two males were arrested at the scene on suspicion of a number of offences, including assault occasioning actual bodily harm and criminal damage.  Both have since been released on bail, pending further enquiries.

“Our enquiries continue and I would appeal to anyone with information to contact us on 101, quoting reference number 2373 of 31/07/20."

Translink have said that they are aware of the incident on Friday, July 30, and that the member of staff is receiving support.

A spokesperson said: "Translink is aware of an attack on a member of our NI Railways team at Great Victoria Street Train Station on the evening of Friday 31 July.  The member of staff is receiving appropriate support from Translink at this time.

""The safety of our customers, staff and the wider public is our top priority at all times.  We condemn all instances of anti-social behaviour and have a zero tolerance policy when it comes to anyone who physically or verbally threatens or abuses our staff.

"We have a range of measures in place to enhance safety and deter anti-social behaviour, including staff training, working closely with the PSNI, security personnel in main stations, staff body cameras and CCTV.

"We will be working closely with the PSNI to support their investigation and subsequent prosecution process."
