Arrested man in Gold Coast cold case 'disposed of gun', court hears

Hitchen, 66, was arrested on Tuesday after pre-dawn raids.

A Gold Coast man who allegedly disposed of the gun used to kill Phillip Carlyle 20 years ago "had no knowledge" of what the gun had been used for, his lawyer says.

After pre-dawn raids on Tuesday, John Hitchen, 66, was charged with being an accessory after the fact over the cold case.

Mr Carlyle was shot in the head four times at his Robina office in 1997.

His business partner at the time, Neil Pentland, was yesterday charged with murder and Pentland's wife was charged with providing a misleading statement.

During Hitchen's appearance in the Southport Magistrates Court today, defence lawyer Dan Rogers told the court his client had no knowledge of what the gun had been used for.

Mr Rogers said the crown case relied heavily on the credibility of witness Dagma Peyrac, Mr Hitchens ex-partner, who gave a statement to police 20 years after Mr Carlyle's death.

"There is no suggestion he was directly involved in the murder or had knowledge of the intended use of a firearm," Mr Rogers said.

He was bailed, to reappear on July 13.

The day Mr Carlyle died he had been preparing to fly to the United States for a work trip and went to his office to finish some last-minute preparations.

He worked as a marketing manager for an emerging internet company, Atnet Pty Ltd.
