Arrest warrant issued for killer driver who failed to front court on fresh driving charges

Andrew John Sheals failed to appear in the Burnie Magistrates Court on fresh driving charges.

A Tasmanian court has ordered a man who killed his girlfriend and their infant child through negligent driving be arrested for failing to appear on fresh driving charges.

Andrew John Sheals was due to front Burnie Magistrates Court on Tuesday morning over new charges from January 2018.

He was set to face court over multiple driving charges including driving under the influence of alcohol, driving without a licence and driving while disqualified.

Sheals was convicted of negligent driving in 2016 after being behind the wheel in a crash that killed his girlfriend and the couple's infant son.

Hayley Maree Best, 16, and two-month-old Johnray Ross were passengers in the car which collided with a semi-trailer on the Bass Highway near Wynyard.

At the time Sheals pled guilty, he was given a three-month suspended jail sentence and placed on a two-year good behaviour bond over the crash.

Outside court, Sheals' grandmother Grace Turner said she believed her grandson was scared after getting multiple death threats.

"He shaved his hair, changed his appearance, he is scared," Mrs Turner said.

"He got multiple phone calls with death threats over the last few months."

"I haven't seen him for weeks … I still have a Nona's love for him, in spite of his mistakes.

"He is haunted everyday by his mistake. He has nightmares about it … Please come back, do what is right."

According to his charge sheet, Sheals was set to plea to the four charges relating to one incident at Talina Street, Montello, on the January 7 this year:

  • Driving while disqualified
  • Driving a motor vehicle while exceeding the prescribed alcohol limit (B/A reading of 0.105)
  • Driving under the influence of intoxicating liquor
  • Being a driver not holding an Australian, foreign or international driving license with alcohol in body
