Arrest warrant filed against Lakers center DeMarcus Cousins in Alabama

The allegations against Los Angeles Lakers center DeMarcus Cousins by the mother of his child, which the Lakers said earlier this week they were taking seriously, have gotten even more serious in the legal realm with the news that charges have been filed against the nine-year NBA veteran.

USA TODAY’s AJ Perez reports that the Mobile (Alabama) Police Department has filed misdemeanor domestic violence charges against Cousins after his ex-girlfriend allegedly recorded Cousins telling her he would “put a bullet through her (expletive) head,” during an argument about having their son attend Cousins’ wedding last weekend in Atlanta. His ex-girlfriend and a spokesman for the police department confirmed the report.

Mobile police spokesperson Charlette M. Solis told USA TODAY Sports on Thursday that “an arrest warrant has been issued.” The third-degree harassing communications charge was listed on the Mobile municipal court website, although no other information was provided.

“Yes, a warrant has been signed,” Cousins’ ex-girlfriend told USA TODAY Sports in a text message Thursday.

The Lakers signed Cousins to a 1-year, $3.5 million contract this summer and he was expected to have the starting center job before suffering a torn ACL a few weeks ago. With the charges now filed against him, it wouldn’t be a surprise to see the waive or buy him out before the season.
