Arrest Sahakyan dead: Russian boxer dies aged 26 days after KO left him in coma

Arrest Sahakyan has died 10 days after he was knocked out in a fight against compatriot Igor Semernin. He was just 26 and had been in a coma since the fight on Boxing Day.

It was a heavy punch to the head that caused the trauma, meaning that emergency surgery was necessary for the doctors to try and save his life.

The fighter suffered swelling on the brain and went into surgery but tragically it has been confirmed that the Armenian-Russian could not be saved, dying on Friday.

His funeral will take place on Tuesday in the Russian city of Tolyatti, though he will be laid to rest in the capital city of Armenia, Yerevan.

Shakyan had won six of his nine professional fights, making an unbeaten start in his first four which resulted in him winning the vacant WBC Asian Boxing Council Silver Middle title.

His relative Svetlana Petrosyan posted to Instagram following the news, she wrote: "How … how to continue to live … Our soul … our joy … My heart is torn to pieces … I don't believe … it's like a bad dream …

"We loved you very much .. very .. our dear. You were the kindest, most cheerful, wonderful, sincere person."
