Arrest over 2017 Limerick murder of pensioner Rose Hanrahan a 'relief' to community

An arrest in connection with the alleged murder of a pensioner has “given a sense of relief” to her community.

It is understood a suspect was detained in the UK in connection with Rose Hanrahan’s killing which took place two years ago this month in Co Limerick.

Gardai remained tight-lipped about when and where the suspect had been detained but it is understood the warrant is currently before the courts.

A source said the suspect must be brought back to Ireland before they can formally arrest and question him about the 78-year-old widow’s death.

A source revealed detectives hope to be able to arrest and question the suspect here.

A Garda spokesman said: “Gardai are aware that an individual has been arrested on a European Arrest Warrant. No further information at this time.”

Ms Hanrahan was found tied up and strangled in her home on New Road, Thomondgate, on December 15, 2017.

Speaking yesterday, local Sinn Fein Councillor John Costelloe said: “The news of the arrest has given a sense of relief to the community two years on from Rose’s death, but they are still a little nervous.”
