Arrest made as man suffers serious injuries following reports of stabbing in broad daylight

Police have arrested a 45-year-old man of suspicion of affray after a man was found with serious injuries on Nowell Lane in Harehills this afternoon.

following reports of a stabbing and immediately erected a cordon on the road, as well as on Harehills Lane near the BP petrol station.

A 40-year-old man has been taken to hospital for treatment to serious injuries.

Enquiries continue and the police scene remains in place.

Meanwhile, local residents have told LeedsLive that they are 'scared' following the incident, which happened on the junction of a busy road in broad daylight.

"It was just like some arguing and stuff that we could hear," said Farhat Ulnisa, who lives a few doors down from the scene.

She praised the quick response of police and ambulance staff and said it is usually a 'really good' place to live - but admitted she has been left shaken by today's events.

She said: "I saw two little children running down the street. They were crying and saying: 'We need to get home as soon as possible'.

"My husband has heard that someone's been stabbed.

"I'm feeling really scared because I've got two toddlers.

"Normally it's a good place to live, but recently there have been quite a lot of arguments going on around here. It's a bit scary."

Church leaders in Harehills and Chapeltown have recently called for people to anonymously leave knives in amnesty bins following a rise in the number of knife crimes.

Any witnesses or anyone with information about the incident on Nowell Lane is asked to contact the non-emergency number 101 or Crimestoppers in confidence on 0800 555 111.
