Arrest made after weapons found during stop-and-search

Police found a man in possession of a knife and a sharpened screwdriver as they carried out a stop-and-search in Mapperley.

Reece Deville, 28, was stopped by officers in Redcliffe Road following reports of a man carrying a weapon in the area.

He was found to have the weapons as well as some cannabis in his possession when he was stopped on Sunday, January 16.

Deville, of no fixed address, insisted that he had the knife and screwdriver on him to cut a carpet at home and to repair his mobile phone.

He was subsequently arrested and charged with possession of a Class B substance, a bladed article, and an offensive weapon.

Deville was remanded in custody and appeared before Nottingham Magistrates’ Court on Monday 17 January, where he pleaded guilty to the charges.

Sergeant James Rimmington, of Nottinghamshire Police, said: “Thanks to the quick actions of Nottinghamshire Police officers, we have been able to take two potentially dangerous weapons off our streets and put a suspect before the courts.

“We have two dedicated knife crime teams focused solely on keeping everyone in our communities safe and stop-and-searches like the one used in this case play an invaluable role in helping us to do just that.

“It is important that the public know that it is illegal to carry knives and that, whatever people might think, they won’t protect you from harm but will actually make you much more vulnerable and liable to end up in danger.”

Deville was bailed to appear before Nottingham Crown Court for sentencing on February 21.
