Arrest made after man hit over head with baseball bat during robbery

Detectives investigating a robbery in which a man was hit over the head with a baseball bat have made an arrest.

An appeal was launched after the victim Paul Schofield, 58, was brutally attacked in Rochdale in November.

Today police confirmed a 48-year-old man has been arrested on suspicion of conspiracy to commit robbery.

He remains in custody for questioning, police said.

The victim was parked on Leamington Street at 10.50pm on Saturday, November 3, when he was approached by three men.

They reportedly ordered him to get out of his Ford Fiesta ST, before smashing the weapon over his head.

They then drove off in the stolen car.

Mr Schofield, from Norden, needed 18 stitches to his head following the brutal attack.

The factory worker told the Manchester Evening News at the time: "I'd just parked up. I opened the door, turned round and there were three lads stood there with baseball bats all dressed in black.

"I held my hands up and, bang, they smashed me over the head.

"I think the adrenaline must have kicked in because it didn't seem real.

"Even now I still don't think it's sunk in. It's the type of thing you read about happening to other people.

"I can't understand why they slugged me. I wasn't putting up a fight."

Det Con Matthew Adshead, of GMP’s Oldham district, said: “I would like to thank everyone who has come forward to police with information following our most recent appeal.

“This morning, we have made an arrest but our enquiries are very much ongoing."

Anyone with information is asked to call police on 0161 856 8978.
