Arrest made after 6 people shot in drive-by outside Detroit banquet hall

DETROIT — Police on Tuesday afternoon arrested a suspect in connection with a shooting on the city’s east side that left one man dead and five other people wounded earlier in the day.

The incident outside Chalmers Banquet Hall in the 9800 block of Chalmers south of East Outer Drive took place about 2 a.m.

Second Deputy Chief Rudy Harper said the suspect, age 30, went to Beaumont Hospital in Grosse Pointe for treatment of a gunshot wound, and hospital staff notified police, leading to an arrest.

Detroit Interim Police Chief James White said at press conference minutes earlier that police had identified a suspect and expected to have that person in custody soon.

White said the business hasn’t been licensed since 2013, and city officials would begin the process of shutting it down later Tuesday. He added that in 2015, six people were shot in an incident at the facility.

The facility did not appear to have a phone number publicly listed. On Tuesday afternoon, a family was holding a repast following the death of a family member, and police said out of respect no actions would be taken until the event ended at 6 p.m.

White said if the business reopens, it will have to provide security and also notify Detroit police when it is holding events that involved large crowds.

White said investigators are poring over video from multiple sources, but declined to say where the video came from. He also declined to discuss what prompted the shooting, saying he didn’t want to compromise the ongoing investigation.

Police say a person or people in a vehicle started firing at a crowd of more than 100 people. Police recovered at least 20 shell casings at the scene, and believe there may have been a shootout, with multiple guns fired.

The man who was killed was 30, White said. Two other men and three women who were shot, ranging in age from 26-46, are "expected to be OK," police tweeted earlier Tuesday.

Police are asking for more information on the shooting. Tipsters who prefer anonymity can share what they know with Crime Stoppers of Michigan at 800-SPEAK-UP.
