Arrest as woman hurt after 'man with axe and knife' seen in town

A man 'with an axe and a knife' has been arrested for assault after a woman was hurt in Stretford.

Police were called to the incident on Harcourt Street at around 7.30pm last night (Sunday).

Officers were alerted to 'reports of a man with an axe and a knife'.

A woman, aged 40, suffered minor injuries at the scene, police said.

A man, aged 33, was arrested on suspicion of section 39 assault and affray.

He remains in custody where he is being quizzed by detectives.

Locals reported a large police presence in the area after the incident last night.

A section of Harcourt Street was reportedly taped off, with Tactical Aid Unit vans spotted at the scene.

In a statement, a GMP spokesperson said: "Police were called to Harcourt Street, Stretford, to reports of a man with an axe and a knife at around 7.30pm on Sunday 20 June.

"A 40-year old woman suffered minor injuries.

"He is currently being questioned about the incident in custody."
