Arrest after reports woman threatened to stab police officer before spitting at him in Piccadilly Gardens

An arrest has been made after reports a woman threatened to stab a police officer before spitting at him in Piccadilly Gardens.

The woman became aggressive after police found her 'shouting and swearing at members of the public', according to a sergeant in GMP's city centre team.

Police were patrolling the area when they came across a group at around 5.45pm this afternoon (Wednesday), Sgt Jon Kenna said.

He added: "The female was shouting and swearing at members of the public.

"When police intervened, the female verbally threatened to stab the police officer and then spat towards the officer.

"The female was restrained and arrested."

A 47-year-old woman has been arrested on suspicion of a Section 4 public order offence and an assault on an emergency worker.

She remains in police custody for questioning.
