Arrest after NT COVID checkpoint chase

NT police have pursued a man for failing to stop at multiple checkpoints. (AAP)

A man is staring down the barrel of $5024 fine for failing to abide by Northern Territory COVID-19 lockdown restrictions after police pursued him for failing to stop at multiple checkpoints.

He was seen about 1am on Saturday when he failed to stop at the Stuart Highway checkpoint between Darwin and Katherine.

Police pursued but terminated the chase soon afterwards.

The vehicle was seen again near Acacia Hill and then later on Saturday morning at a checkpoint outside Katherine, where police say the man was driving on the wrong side of the road and again failed to stop at the checkpoint.

Another pursuit was terminated as the man got closer to Katherine, but road spikes were deployed and the police followed his stricken car until he crashed at the southern Katherine checkpoint.

He was taken to hospital for treatment before being interviewed by police.

NT Police Superintendent Peter Dash said that as well as the "several public health breaches and traffic offences" the matter was also being treated as a "custody incident".
