A man has been arrested after an altercation at Lake Macquarie allegedly ended with another man been slashed with a knife.

Police said the incident occurred about 2am Thursday, when three men, aged 21, 23 and 26, became involved in an argument outside a Blackalls Park home.

It will be alleged the oldest man was slashed in the arm with a large knife, causing a deep laceration.

Hospital staff alerted authorities, prompting Lake Macquarie police to attend the Blackalls Park residence. A crime scene was established and the 21-year-old and 23-year-old were arrested.

The 21-year-old was charged with wounding with intent to cause grievous bodily harm.

He was bail refused to appear in Toronto Local Court on Friday.

Police said the 23-year-old was released pending further inquiries.
