Arran fundraisers' Addams Family themed 'Monster Ball' will coin in cash for MND Scotland

A pair of Halloween-daft fundraisers are throwing an Addams Family themed ball next month to raise funds for MND Scotland – in honour of their loved one who lives with the condition.

Pauline Reid Adamson, 49, and husband Charlie have organised a spooktacular bash on Saturday, October 23 at Adamton Country House Hotel in Monkton.

It aims to raise cash for the charity who provide care and support to people affected by Motor Neurone Disease (MND), like Pauline's dad John Reid, from Dalmellington.

The 'Monster Ball', complete with prizes for fancy dress and local live band Angelstar, will be the culmination of fundraisers that Pauline and Charlie, who live on Arran, have undertaken this year, including a charity auction.

Offshore worker Charlie also embarked on a gruelling fitness challenge, which saw the 49-year-old do 100 press-ups, 100 sit-ups, no alcohol and a 10k, for 100 days.

Pauline, who has previously fundraised for Clic Sargent and Cats Protection, said she wanted to complete a fundraiser for MND Scotland after her dad, 72, was diagnosed two years ago.

“I think Covid made me feel it more, being on the island, because I couldn’t get to dad and we weren’t allowed to visit,” she said.

“With him being so ill, he’s on his own since my mum has passed away. He was really isolated. I just felt so helpless. I can’t even imagine how he feels.

“He’s totally all there in his mind but physically his body just fails him. He’s so frail and ill and not been out the house in two years."

Holistic massage therapist Pauline admitted that until her dad was diagnosed, she didn’t know much about MND; a condition that affects the brain and nerves and for which there’s no known cure.

She said: “I didn’t realise how cruel a disease it is. I think to educate people is really important. I want people to know about it.

“They’re close to breakthroughs and treatments for this so I think now’s the time to get funding behind it."

Pauline, who will be re-wearing her elegant black wedding gown in a glamourous take on Morticia Addams, still has 100 tickets left to sell for the gothic glam ball.

She said: “I love Halloween – we got married at Halloween – so I thought what better way to do a Monsters ball; it ties in everything that I love and it would be something really positive for MND and my dad.

“My dad loves when I tell him about these things and can show him photos. He feels involved. He knows all about the ball and is excited.

“It’s a great way to finish all these other fundraisers we’ve done throughout the year.

“Let’s end it on something really positive and really fun now that we’re allowed to get together.

“I really want to get the word out so that people know there’s an event happening and it is open to the public.

“It’s not strictly fancy dress either – even though we’re doing an Addams Family theme and there will be prizes for that – the whole theme is Gothic and Glam.”
