Around the remote: Chuck Barney's TV picks for Jan. 15-21

DON'T MISS: "Homeland" _ The popular spy thriller takes on a timely feel as it returns for its turbo-charged sixth season. A new president has just been elected and former CIA agent Carrie Mathison (Claire Danes) is now working for a Brooklyn-based foundation that provides aid to Muslims living in the U.S. The season, we're told, will deal with a transitional time where a "very fragile and complex transfer of power" takes place between the outgoing president and the incoming leader. 9 p.m. Sunday, Showtime.

Other Bets:

SUNDAY: "Victoria," a lavish new "Masterpiece" series, recalls the early reign of Britain's Queen Victoria (Jenna Coleman), who assumed the crown at the tender age of 18. Part 1 follows her struggles to take charge amid plots to manipulate her. 9 p.m., PBS.

SUNDAY: Jude Law plays the title character in "The Young Pope." It's a 10-episode miniseries about a fictional pontiff from Brooklyn who stubbornly resists many Vatican traditions while struggling through a crisis of faith. Diane Keaton also stars. 9 p.m., HBO.

MONDAY: "Summer House" just might help take the chill off your winter ... or not. Apparently, it's a reality series that follows wealthy young knuckleheads as they frolic, party and argue a lot in the beach town of Montauk, N.Y. 10 p.m., Bravo.

TUESDAY: It's back-to-school day for the ladies of "Teachers" as the twisted sitcom returns for its second season. Unfortunately for their students, these demented dunces still don't have their acts together. 10 p.m., TV Land.

WEDNESDAY: Joel McHale is our host for the "People's Choice Awards 2017," the one major trophy derby that enables fans to decide who rules in categories covering movies, music, television and digital. Funny man Kevin Hart leads the field with five nominations. 9 p.m., CBS.

WEDNESDAY: The new military combat drama series "SIX" follows members of a Navy SEAL team as they embark on a dangerous mission to rescue their former troop leader from the hands of terrorists. Walton Goggins and Barry Sloane head the cast. 10 p.m., History.

THURSDAY: "Scandal" finally launches its new season with a story line that sounds pretty familiar: The election night tallies come in and the presidential race results prove to be "shocking." 9 p.m., ABC.

THURSDAY: "Mom" offers up some fun stunt-casting as Chris Pratt, the real-life husband of Anna Faris, drops by for a visit. Pratt plays a charming horseback riding instructor who Christy (Faris) falls for. We assume they'll have some chemistry. 9 p.m., CBS.

FRIDAY: "Change and Challenge: The Inauguration of Donald Trump" is one of several news specials that will focus on today's festivities in Washington D.C. and look ahead to the new presidency. 8 p.m., CBS.

SATURDAY: Supremacy on the ice is at stake during the U.S. Figure Skating Championships in Kansas City, Mo. Tonight, the top female competitors from across the country take part in the free-skate portion of the competition. 8 p.m., NBC
