Around 700 North East homes without electricity a day after power surge caused chaos around the country

Around 700 homes around the North East are without power a day after a National Grid surge left 100,000 without electricity.

There was chaos around the country on Friday after a power surge caused almost 1m people to lose electricity just before 5pm.

In the North East, 100,000 homes and businesses were affected with the Metro unable to run between Airport and Regent Centre due to the cut.

Newcastle Airport was also plunged into darkness for around 15 minutes with one traveller reporting that "various alarms were going off".

Traffic lights also went down and trains heading to and from London Kings Cross were severely disrupted as LNER urged passengers not to travel.

On Saturday, around 700 homes in Tyneside, Sunderland and County Durham were left without power in what is thought to be a separate issue.

Most of the homes lost power in the early hours of this morning between 3.30am and 5.30am.

The Northern Powergrid say the power cut has been caused by an unexpected problem with an underground cable.

The affected postcodes are NE33, NE34, NE6, DH9 and DH4.

Engineers are working to get the electricity back on for customers by 3.30pm.

The National Grid Electricity System Operator said there had been issues with two generators on Friday, with the power mostly restored around the region after an hour.
