Around 70 new coronavirus cases in France linked to schools reopening last week

A spike in coronavirus cases in France has been linked to the reopening of schools.

The French government has been loosening its lockdown restrictions and thousands of pre-school and primary students returned to school under social distancing measures last week.

But after around 70 new cases of coronavirus were linked to school children, French education minister Jean-Michel Blanquer said all of the affected schools had been ordered to immediately close.

Around a third of French children were able to return to school under the new guidelines with classes capped at just 15 pupils each.

French media reported that seven schools in northern France were now closed due to the flare-up in cases.

Mr Blanquer did not specify if the 70 cases of Covid-19 were among students or teachers.

He added that given the incubation period for the virus is several days, people are "likely" to have been infected before the reopening of schools.

The French government has plans to reopen junior high schools in "green" regions less affected by the virus this week.

Last week, France recorded its first death of a child linked to Kawasaki disease, a mysterious inflammatory syndrome that some doctors say could be triggered by Covid-19.

The nine-year-old boy was one of 125 children in France currently with the syndrome.

French authorities have reported at least 142,411 people infected with coronavirus and 28,108 deaths.
