Around 65,000 people in Scotland estimated to be infected with coronavirus, says chief medical officer

The predicted number of people infected with the coronavirus is estimated to be around 65,000.

Scotland's chief medical officer Dr Catherine Calderwood announced the rise in those likely to be infected at the Scottish Government’s daily briefing.

Dr Calderwood stated that: “Although only 1,000 or so have been confirmed, we estimate that around 65,000 will be infected.

“The vast majority do not realise or perhaps have symptoms and thank you to them for self isolating.”

The latest prediction comes as the number of confirmed cases in Scotland has risen to 1,059.

Around 72 of those who have tested positive are currently being treated in one of Scotland’s Intensive Care Unit’s.

Nicola Sturgeon confirmed that a further eight people have died of Covid-19, bringing the total number of deaths to 33.

Both Ms Sturgeon and Dr Calderwood reiterated the importance of staying indoors to help slow down the spread of the virus, especially as we approach the weekend.

Adding: “‘For those finding this weekend difficult, be reassured my NHS colleagues appreciate it. You are keeping them safe so they can keep us alive.”
