Around 150 people left on streets as government-funded homeless services cut drastically on Christmas Day

Government funded daytime services for the homeless will be cut drastically on Christmas Day with only one of them opening for a limited time.

A coffee shop run by Focus Ireland is the only one out of ten services that will be running - and it will be drastically cut to just three hours from 11.30am - 2.30pm.

The Dublin Regional Housing Executive's seasonal timetable has been blasted as "about 150" people will be left on the streets for Christmas.

Three of the city's main hostels will also be closed during daytime hours meaning many will be forced to leave by 10am tomorrow.

Sinn Fein's Chris Andrews says the limited services show a "lack of planning and thought" and says 150 could be left with nowhere to go for the day.

The local councillor said: "Focus Ireland are the only day service and their capacity is only about 30 people. Even that's only open for three hours in the day.

"On top of this three of the [government-funded] hostels aren't open for 24 hours. So any people using them will have to leave at 10am on Christmas morning.

"So they'll be out on the street. There' must be at least 150 who'll be left on the streets.

"Places like Mendicity will be open and that's where I'll be but they aren't funded by the DRHE.

"Even St Stephen's Day is extremely limited as well, and this has highlighted the lack of planning and funding in homeless day services.

"We've known the 25th December is going to be coming for a while - and yet this is the situation.

"The DRHE needs to step up to the plate here and invest more and plan more."
