Arnold road set to get CCTV after reports of antisocial behaviour

Plans to install CCTV overlooking a busy road following reports of antisocial behaviour look set to go ahead.

Gedling Borough Council has lodged plans to build a 10-metre pole with CCTV cameras on top in Rolleston Drive in Arnold.

The proposed location for the cameras is at the junction with Brookfield Road, near the Major Oak pub and a number of takeaway restaurants and businesses.

It has been recommended for approval by planning officers.

Leader of Gedling Borough Council, Councillor John Clarke said: “There have been a number of incidents of anti-social behaviour in the area and we have been working closely with Nottinghamshire Police to find solutions.

"We have also listened to residents’ concerns and are proposing that CCTV is installed in the hot spot area.

"We have seen some very good results from the camera installed on Smithy Crescent, Arnold, which has significantly reduced the number of incidents there and residents have given us some very positive feedback.

"The camera will be installed as soon as possible, subject to planning permission being granted.”

Residents Nottinghamshire Live spoke to have welcomed the proposal.

Carol Dawson, 55, of Arnold, said: "You can see how busy the road gets.

"It's one of the busiest in Arnold with people going to work and school. There's lots of cars and people crossing.

"I think CCTV would be a good idea for the street. It would pick up incidents better. I remember there was a big crash on the road a few months ago so it would help seeing how things happened."

Richard White, a 39-year-old delivery driver of Arnold, said: "I think it's well-needed for the area. I can't really see any issues with it.

"It would be a positive thing. There's a lot of shops here so it might stop any kids from messing around outside at night."

Sue Beach, 58, of Arnold, added: "I think that makes a lot of sense. There's a good amount of traffic on here during rush hour and on the school run."

The council's planning committee will decide on the proposal in its next meeting on Wednesday, January 15.
