Arnold care home for people with learning difficulties placed in special measures by health inspectors

An Arnold care home responsible for people with learning difficulties has been placed in special measures and deemed 'inadequate' by health bosses.

Heathcotes, in Bestwood Lodge Drive, accommodates up to 10 people with learning disabilities including autism or complex mental health needs. Nine people were using the service during the inspection in March.

Inspectors from the Care Quality Commission rated the care home inadequate for the 'safe' and well-led' categories and raised issues with how medicines were accessed.

Details in the report said: "Safeguarding issues were not always managed effectively to protect people and staff from harm.

"Incidents were not sufficiently reviewed and robustly analysed, to consider themes and patterns and how lessons could be learnt, and improvements made.

"People did not always have consistent support to access their medicines should they need them. They were not always supported by enough staff sufficiently trained to manage their needs.

"People's nutritional and health needs were not consistently met, their health needs, such as long-term health issues were not monitored.

"There was a lack of consistent up to date information in care plans to provide staff with the guidance to safely meet people’s needs.

"Where there was guidance staff were not always following the information in people’s care plans to provide safe consistent care."

The service was previously rated good by inspectors in March 2016, but has now slipped to the lowest possible rating.

Inspectors did praise staff at the care home for their levels of care, giving them a 'good' rating.

Management at the care home said the issues had been addressed and expected a better outcome when inspectors return within six months.

A spokesman for Heathcotes said: "We are very aware of why this rating was arrived at and are working closely with the CQC to ensure the fastest possible return to the standards which allowed Heathcotes Arnold to achieve and maintain a Good rating for a number of years.

"Heathcotes is currently carrying out a comprehensive review of the service and has urgently addressed the issues raised in the CQC inspection.

"We expect it to be re-inspected very soon and having placed a specialist manager there to oversee the process, we fully expect a significantly better outcome at that inspection.

"We pride ourselves on maintaining high standards and it is a matter of immense regret that, having previously been rated good, Heathcotes Arnold has fallen below those standards. We are working diligently to deliver the improvements that are required."
