Arnie Thornton tributes paid as Coagh United remembers club legend

Coagh United have led the tributes to club legend Arnie Thornton who has died.

The County Tyrone club said "our hearts are broken" following the death of one of its most popular and loyal servants.

Aaron Leslie (Arnie), from Cookstown, was an iconic figure around Hagan Park having served as a player and coach with the club.

Earlier this year a Coagh United Legends team took on a Glentoran select side in a charity match to support the stalwart.

The club said on Facebook: "Our hearts are broken. Arnie Thornton was not just a Coagh United Legend; he was our friend.

"Our thoughts and prayers are with Arnie’s wife Aislinn and his children, Ryan, Jessica and Jack; his Mummy and Daddy, Thea and Les; his sister and brother in law, Amanda and Noel; his entire family circle and his many many friends,

"There will only ever be one Arnie Thornton, and he will be a Legend at our Club forever.

"Rest easy, Arnie. We love you. "

Glentoran manager Rodney McAree added: "Sad news, Arnie was a great lad and a good person, thoughts and prayers are with his family and everyone at Coagh United FC."

Hanover FC said: "Sincere condolences to Arnie’s family, friends and all at Coagh United FC. From all at Hanover FC."

Moyola Park said: "The thoughts and prayers of everyone at Moyola Park AFC are with the family and friends of Arnie and all Coagh United FC at this sad news."

The Mid Ulster Youth League added: "An absolute gentleman. Will be sorely missed by so many people. Thoughts and Prayers are with Arnie's wife and family at this very sad time."

And Dunloy FC said: "Very sorry to hear this news. The thoughts and prayers of everyone at Dunloy FC are with you all at this time.."

Mr Thornton is survived by his wife Aislinn, children Ryan, Jessica and Jack.

His funeral service will be at the family home on Sunday, May 21 commencing at 2.30pm, followed by burial in Lissan Parish Churchyard.
