Arne Slot hits back at Liverpool future questions after bruising Aston Villa defeat: 'Not about me'

Arne Slot would not be drawn into making further comments on his Liverpool future after his side were subject to a damaging 4-2 defeat at Aston Villa on Friday night.

The Reds scored twice through Virgil van Dijk but were well off the pace in a match where they could have sealed Champions League qualification with a win.

Slot’s position has come under considerable scrutiny this season as Liverpool failed miserably to defend their Premier League title, with club legend Xabi Alonso’s position in the manager market only adding fuel to the fire.

But refused to discuss his future after the match at Villa Park, saying he was fully focussed on next week’s season finale against Brentford at Anfield.

"It's not about me, it's about us being disappointed with the result,” he told BBC Match of the Day. “I spoke yesterday on it and that's enough.”

Speaking on Thursday, he said any decision regarding his future would not be his to make.

Slot continued, saying Liverpool desperately needed to win back the support of an increasingly disilussioned fanbase, large portions of which have been calling for his head to roll for some time.

“Our focus is on the Brentford game and making sure we earn the support of the fans by starting the game aggressive and well.

“The culmination of the fan support and a good performance will lead us to what we want to achieve and that is qualifying for the Champions League.”

He added that Liverpool’s poor away form was down to the fact that they concede too many goals, and score too few.

“In general teams struggle more away from home but for a top team like us it's far too many losses and dropped points.

“That hugely has to do with the way we concede is far too easy in general. We have chances but we've not been as clinical in fishing them this season as we were last season.

“It doesn't help that [Alexander] Isak has hardly played for us or that Hugo [Ekitike] has been unavailable. It is what it is. Next week, Brentford is where our focus is.”
