Arnaud Djoum's brutally honest Hearts admission as he explains why he left Jambos

Arnaud Djoum has revealed the simple reason he decided to quit Hearts for Saudi Arabia - money.

The Cameroon midfielder was a key player for Craig Levein ’s side and was offered a new deal to remain at Tynecastle after his contract expired.

But Djoum opted to move to Saudi outfit Al-Raed, after playing for his country at the African Cup of Nations during the summer.

And he has no problems revealing why he opted to play in the obscurity of the Saudi Professional League rather than return to Scotland after four years with Hearts.

Djoum said: “At the end of my contract at Hearts I had a lot of offers including a chance to return there.

“I wanted to play in the African Cup of Nations before making my decision.

“I looked at all the offers with my agent and decided the one in Saudi Arabia was by far the most financially enticing.

“Also they had shown great interest in me and made clear they wanted me - their president even travelled to see me in Egypt at the tournament.

“The Saudi league is the best in Asia and every club is now allowed to pick up to eight foreigners so there is a lot of good talent here.

“We have a really good Belgian manager too and I can’t wait for the season to start.

“I’ve had a good break because at Hearts I played almost 60 games for club and country and I needed a rest.”
