Army-run coronavirus testing centre opening in Salford - here are the rules

An army-run coronavirus testing centre is being opened in Salford on Wednesday.

The mobile, pop-up testing centre will be opened at Salford Civic Centre until June 14, say council bosses.

Tests will be available by appointment only through the government's testing website and will be strictly limited to essential workers.

The test involves taking a swab of the nose and the back of the throat, which can be done by the person themselves (self-administered) or by someone else (assisted).

Mobile testing units travel around the UK to increase access to coronavirus testing. They respond to need, travelling to test essential workers at sites including care homes, police stations and prisons, according to the testing website.

These groups of people can access the mobile centre testing through GOV.UK:

  • essential workers in England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland
  • anyone in England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland over 5 years old who has symptoms of coronavirus and lives with an essential worker
  • children under 5 years old in England and Wales who have symptoms of coronavirus and live with an essential worker (this test must be performed by a parent or guardian)

Essential workers can either self-refer for a coronavirus test or be referred by their employer if they have symptoms or live with someone who does.

A spokesperson for Salford City Council said: "An army mobile pop-up #COVID19 testing centre is being held at Salford Civic Centre from tomorrow until 14 June.

"Testing is only by appointment for essential workers and others eligible through the government testing website."

Go to the government website for a list of essential workers and instructions on how to apply for a test.
