One soldier was killed in firing by Pakistan Army on the Line of Control (LoC) in the Gurez Sector of Jammu and Kashmir on Monday.

An Army spokesman said Pakistan resorted to an unprovoked ceasefire violation in the afternoon. “[The Indian] Army retaliated strongly. One soldier was martyred.”

A Jammu-based Army spokesman said Pakistan troops also fired with small arms and mortars in the Krishna Ghati Sector in Poonch around 9.45 a.m. “The Indian Army retaliated.” The two Armies also exchanged “heavy fire” at Sunderbani in Rajouri.

Lt. Gen. K.J.S. Dhillon, Commander of the Chinar Corps, presided over a function in Srinagar to mark the 48th anniversary of India’s victory in the 1971 war with Pakistan. “A victory of such a magnitude would not have been possible without the tremendous sacrifice of soldiers. Their matchless contribution to nation-building is an example for future generations...,” he said.

The Army said India had captured 93,000 prisoners of war, “the maximum number since the end of the Second World War.” The Chinar Corps was responsible for the entire erstwhile State of Jammu and Kashmir during the war.
