Army opens emergency coronavirus test centre in Leeds to meet demand

A pop-up test centre has been set up in Morley, Leeds, for key workers who need to be screened for Covid-19.

Army personnel have been manning the emergency test centre to cope with the extra demand for tests across West Yorkshire throughout today (Monday).

The first test centre in Leeds opened last month, when Temple Green Park and Ride was transformed into a permanent drive-thru test centre for key workers.

However, the new pop-up test centre - which is at Morley Leisure Centre - is only open for today, according to a government spokesperson from the Department of Health and Social Care.

The only people allowed to visit the site are key workers who have pre-booked a slot. The site was patrolled by soldiers throughout the day to ensure it was properly managed.

It was the latest pop-up test centre as part of plans by the government to eventually open almost 100 across the country.

Earlier this month, several key workers said they were left facing trips of up to 150 miles after the Leeds test centre and others nearby became fully booked.

Meanwhile, cancer survivor Aimee Walker, 40, was left waiting more than a week for her test results to come back after visiting on May 6.

The list of key workers who were oringally eligible for a coronavirus test included all NHS and social care staff, police officers, firefighters, transport workers, teachers, childminders and social workers.

However, the health secretary Matt Hancock has now confirmed that everyone over the age of five will be able to book a test if they are showing symptoms of Covid-19.

A full list of everyone who can book a test is available on the government website, alongside details of how to reserve a slot.
