Army Major Marcus Heslop booted out over £39,000 boarding school fees fiddle

A major has been thrown out of the Army after fraudulently claiming £39,000 for boarding school fees.

Marcus Heslop, a Royal Tank Corps Major, landed a 15-month suspended sentence in June for falsely claiming the Army’s Continuing Education Allowance.

He was told to repay the £39,000.

Heslop, 47, had claimed school fees for his two sons, paid if an officer is accompanied by his partner overseas and their kids stay in the UK.

He had applied in good faith, but his wife failed to join him and he did not disclose this.

Last week the Appeal Court overturned the £39,000 order.

It was argued he could have got the fees.

Lord Justice Holroyde had “sympathy for the reality of the unhappy situation when his wife decided not to join him”.
