Army choppers spotted over Edinburgh as Apaches take part in 'training flight'

Two helicopters flying over Edinburgh on Friday afternoon have been identified as army-class aircraft on training manoeuvers.

The Apaches were spotted soaring above the Capital by onlookers enjoying the April weather as the city was bathed in bright spring sunshine.

They AH1 aircraft - which have been used by the British Army in Afghanistan and Libya - were on a training flight from a base in the South of England.

A Ministry of Defence spokesman confirmed pilots from the 3 Regt, Army Air Corps based in Wattisham, Suffolk were undergoing practice flights towards the end of the week as part of routine training.

A video captured from a garden in the city shows the choppers whirring as they returned south to the base, with clear conditions making it an ideal day to undergo the training process.

The MOD has been carrying out training flights allowing pilots the opportunity to gain experience navigating around mountainous terrain in the Highlands.

They have now returned to the South East of England, but will likely return for further training flights in the near future.

Apache AH Mk 1 helicopters have been used by British forces since 2005, but have been used by the US since an initial deployment during the Gulf War in 1991.
