Army called in as smoke bomb found at construction site near Clifton

The Army disposal unit was called after a smoke bomb was unearthed at a construction site.

The discovery was made at the site between Clifton and Gotham at 10am on Thursday, April 1.

A cordon was put in place by police in the field after workers on the site found the device.

The Army bomb disposal unit attended the scene, examined the device and made it safe before it could be removed.

It's believed the device was buried there underground for years before being found, likely once being part of an old military smoke device.

Chief Inspector Rob Shields from Nottinghamshire Police, said: "The item, which had the appearance of an artillery shell, is suspected to be a part of an old military smoke device and will have been buried for some years.”

"Fortunately the device was found in a remote location which allowed it to be made safe without any disruption to the local community.

"The military ordnance piece has now been removed by our explosive ordnance disposal colleagues and work is ongoing to ensure the area is now safe."
