Army bomb squad close major road after man finds grenade

A bomb disposal team were called to a Liverpool street after a grenade was pulled from a canal.

Boundary Street in Vauxhall was closed in both directions shortly after 3pm on Sunday as police descended on the area. The road closure came after the discovery of an old grenade which was found by a fisherman in the Leeds-Liverpool canal.

Photos taken at the scene show an army bomb disposal team parked beside the canal and a large police cordon in place. Merseyside Police said the incident was reported at around 3pm and involved the discovery of a "rusty grenade" which was not active.

Boundary Street was closed between Commercial Road and Steel Court for over two hours until shortly before 5.30pm on Sunday, but the closure has now been lifted. A bomb disposal team were called to a similar incident last month involving the discovery of a grenade at a house on Lacey Street in Widnes.

Police, supported by armed officers, were called to the scene on February 6 following reports of a concern for the safety of a man. He was later arrested on suspicion of a weapon but has since been released without charge.

Cheshire Police said EOD unit was called and it was confirmed the "grenade" was chemically inactive. It was removed from the address to be destroyed.
