Army bomb squad called out as magnet fisher finds grenade in Leeds city centre

An army bomb disposal unit had to be called out in Leeds after a magnet fisherman reeled in a grenade in the water.

West Yorkshire Police and the army were called to Crown Point Road in Leeds city centre at about 1.25pm on Saturday (June 26) after the fisherman reported the alarming catch.

The road was taped off while police dealt with the incident.

An army bomb disposal unit blew up the grenade and disposed of it safely.

The road was closed until 4pm, which caused diversions for motorists while several First West Yorkshire bus services also had to be rerouted.

A spokesperson for West Yorkshire Police said: "A magnet fisherman was out enjoying his hobby in Leeds as they do, and found an old grenade.

"We called out the army explosive team to go and dispose of it.

"It was too rusty and old to tell if it had been a real grenade or an old prop, but it was disposed of safely and smoothly and nobody was injured. The road was reopened at 4pm."
