Army Bomb Disposal Team called to deal with 'explosive device' in Santry, north Dublin

Locals were left confused and scared after the Army Bomb Disposal Team were called in to deal with an 'explosive device' in Santry in north Dublin on Thursday morning.

Residents came across the device on Shanliss Walk in the early hours of yesterday morning and the Defence Forces were called in immediately.

The road was closed for a couple of hours as the team successfully dealt with the situation.

One local who was out of the area at the time feared for her father who lived close by. 

They said: "There was talks in a local closed group chat that something that looked like a bomb had been found.

"The device was found by two elderly neighbours who were taken to the police station to help with enquiries."

They added: "All the residents were evacuated from their homes but when the device was removed, they were allowed back." 

A spokesman for the Defence Forces told Dublin Live: "On Thursday, following a request from An Garda Síochána, the Army Bomb Disposal Team was tasked to investigate a suspect device in Santry, Dublin 9. The team arrived on scene at 10.10am.

"On arrival a cordon was established and nearby buildings evacuated for the duration of the operation.

"One improvised explosive device (IED) was identified, made safe and was removed for further examination. The team departed the scene at 12.10pm. 

"Should members of the public encounter suspicious items, or hazardous substances, they are advised to maintain a safe distance and inform An Garda Síochána."
