Armistice Day 2020: 'Low-key' ceremony held at Victoria Embankment in Nottingham

This year's wreath-laying ceremony for Armistice Day 2020 was a low-key affair.

To prevent people gathering for the service in the midst of the national coronavirus lockdown, the small ceremony which would usually draw huge crowds to Victoria Embankment was not publicised in advance.

Due to the current lockdown restrictions, people were being asked by city officials to pay their respects from home, and residents were also asked to take to their doorsteps at 11am to observe the two-minute silence.

The traditional two-minute silence was observed and a small wreath-laying ceremony took place at 11am on Wednesday, November 11, 2020.

Prayers were led by Rev Tom Gillum, the vicar of St Mary's Church in the Lace Market, before wreaths were laid by the Lord-Lieutenant and High Sheriff of Nottinghamshire, the Sheriff of Nottingham, representatives of the county, borough and district councils, armed forces, the Royal British Legion, the Commonwealth, United Nations, police, fire and rescue, and the NHS.

Before the day, Councillor David Mellen, Leader of Nottingham City Council said: “While times are challenging at present, it is important for Nottingham that we have the opportunity to remember those who sacrificed their lives in conflict and to pay our respects to them.

"It’s vital that we can do this in a safe and controlled way which sadly means it has not been possible to hold the Service of Remembrance at the Victoria Embankment.”
