Armed thug robs Greenock shop 'with firearm' in shock daylight incident

Police are hunting an armed thug who robbed a shop in Greenock .

Staff at the U-Save store in the town's Belville Street have been left badly shaken after the incident, which took place at around 3.15pm on Saturday.

The suspect, who threatened staff with what appeared to be a firearm , made off with a two-figure sum of money.

Officers are appealing for information to trace the man responsible, who tried to conceal his identity by wearing a scarf over his face.

He is described as white, around 5ft10in in height, late teens or early twenties and is of medium build.

The two male members of staff, aged 15 and 23, were left shaken but uninjured during the robbery.

Officers have been carrying out door-to-door enquiries and are checking CCTV footage for any additional information on the suspect.

Detective Sergeant Stuart Young said: "This shop is popular and well used by local people.

"I am appealing to anyone who was in the area around the time of the incident to contact us as they may have information which could assist our enquiries.

"Did you notice anyone hanging around outside the shop, did anything strike you as odd or suspicious? Please think back and consider if you saw anything which could help our investigation."

Anyone with information is asked to call police via 101, quoting incident number 2664 of Saturday, August 10.

Alternatively, call Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111 where information can be given anonymously.
