
An armed thief held up a business at Raymond Terrace on Wednesday before fleeing the scene on foot across Benjamin Lee Drive in a south westerly direction.
Police were called to the scene after 12pm, after reports a man had entered a grocery store armed with a small axe and told a store attendant to open the cash register.
The attendant complied and the thief fled with stolen cash across Benjamin Lee Drive.
Officers from Port Stephens-Hunter Police District arrived on the scene a short time later and established a crime scene.
The man is described as being of Caucasian appearance, aged between 16 and 20 years old and 170 to 175cm tall. He was last seen wearing a grey hoodie pulled over his head, black track pants, black slip on canvass shoes, yellow gloves and had his face covered. He was carrying a small black backpack.
