16-hour armed standoff ends peacefully at Morton Grove home

File photo

An armed standoff ended peacefully in Morton Grove Tuesday morning, 16 hours after police say a man pulled a shotgun on officers who tried to arrest him at his home.

Kevin M. Maguire, 51, was arrested about 9:15 a.m. and taken to a hospital for a “checkup,” Morton Grove Police Commander Paul Yaras said in an email.

“He eventually came out when confronted by officers in the house and a K-9,” Yaras said. Police had used “chemical irritants” earlier in the standoff without effect, he said.

“No shots were fired and the situation did end relatively peacefully,” Yaras said.

The standoff began around 5 p.m. Monday in the 8900 block of Oriole Avenue when Maguire took out a shotgun as officers approached the home, Yaras said in a separate statement.

He pointed the gun out of windows several times overnight, Yaras said. A family member inside the home escaped unharmed.
