Armed robbery charge after Tarro hold-up for cash and cigarettes

Court, justice, courts, judge.

A MAN will face court in Maitland on Wednesday after an alleged robbery at Tarro.

Police were called to reports of an armed hold-up on Anderson Drive about 4pm on Tuesday at a convenience store.

Port Stephens-Hunter police attended and began investigating, securing the area as a crime scene.

The shop owner told police a man allegedly entered with a large knife before demanding cash and cigarettes.

"The owner challenged the man who fled the store without any property," police said in a statement.

The 42-year-old shop owner escaped without injury.

Hours later, a man attended Maitland police station.

Police arrested the 21-year-old about 6.50pm, charging him with a single count of armed robbery with an offensive weapon.

The 21-year-old was refused bail to face Maitland Local Court.
