'It looked like an assault rifle': Armed robbers escape with cash from Armaguard van in Sydney

Armed robbers have escaped after targeting an Armaguard van in south-west Sydney.

Two men with firearms got out of a vehicle, described as a small hatchback, and threatened two armed guards in Clemton Park on Mckinder Street at about 11am.

They stole cash before fleeing in the car, which was believed to be driven by a third person.

Cafe owner Peter, who asked that his last name be withheld, witnessed the robbery on Mckinder street, and said he saw a man carrying a "big gun" that "looked like an assault rifle".

"I saw a big guy just shouting 'get on the ground, get on the ground' to the [Armaguard drivers] … [and they] got on the ground," he said.

"As soon as the guys got on the ground, [the robbers] got their bags and got in the car and left," he said.

Peter said his customers ended up leaving the cafe and did not finish their food.

The two male guards were uninjured.

"Staff were really scared — one of the girls had to go home, she was really scared," Peter said.

"It was pretty scary but luckily no-one got hurt."
