Armed robbers smashed in the front of a bank and attempted to steal money from inside while a cash-in-transit delivery was taking place.
Two men approached the cash-in-transit staff as they delivered money to Santander, on Woodford Road, in Bramhall.
One man was carrying a large weapon, thought to be a sledge-hammer.
The pair smashed in a glass door at the front of the bank and one of the men walked inside.

Staff, who were inside at the time, set off the security smoke alarm and escaped through the back door.
The men left the bank empty-handed and are believed to have got into a vehicle parked nearby.
They drove off on a nearby service road, leading to Maple Road.
Both men were wearing balaclavas at the time.
Greater Manchester Police have confirmed nobody was injured, but staff members were left shaken.

No arrests have been made and officers are appealing for witnesses following the incident, which took place on Monday, December 30 at around 9pm.
Residents in the area said they could hear a loud bang last night coming from Woodford Road.
Images, shared on the Stockport Crimewatch Facebook page, show a large number of police officers outside the bank and a police cordon stretching up to Juniper Cafe.
A G4S van can also be seen within the cordon.
