Dec. 05--Police are looking for a gunman who fired a shot during a failed robbery at a Wicker Park neighborhood gas station Thursday night.
The gunman, who was wearing a green safety vest and holding a napkin over his mouth, entered the Shell station at 1950 W. Division St. about 6:30 p.m., according to police.
He asked where he could find more napkins and the clerk told him in the back. The man then asked for Newport cigarettes, which the clerk got for him after stepping away momentarily.
When he returned the man pointed a gun at him, leaned over the counter and said: "Give me your money or I'll shoot you,'' according to a police report.
As the worker struggled to open the register, a taxi driver who was also inside the station ran outside and continued watching them through the door while in the parking lot.
"Hurry up...give me the money...I'll kill you...I mean it,'' the robber said after walking behind the counter, the report said.
"I need some time,'' said the clerk, who then tried to escape.
He pushed a large display case with merchandise at the robber, who fired a shot and ran out the front door, the report said.
The taxi driver shouted for police as the robber fled. Another person heard the taxi driver yelling and saw him running after the robber, who went east on Division, almost getting hit by a CTA bus, the report said.
Police said nothing was taken and they are trying to review video taken of the incident.
No one was injured.
