Armed robber ends up in hospital after crashing stolen getaway car during garda chase in Longford

A scumbag who robbed a post office is in hospital after crashing as he was being chased by Gardai.

The armed raider is being treated for head injuries after losing control of his getaway car following the raid at a Longford post office.

The suspect, originally from Dublin, entered the office shortly after 2.30pm on Wednesday armed with a baseball bat and a Stanley knife.

He demanded cash and took the keys to a Mazda car after threatening a female customer.

After taking a significant sum of cash, the thug took off in the car with a number of units from both Longford and Granard in pursuit.

A short time later, he was arrested after losing control of the motor and crashing between Carrickboy and Edgeworthstown.

The man, aged in his 40s, is orginally from Dublin but had been living in the Edgeworthstown area.

He sustained a head injury and is being treated at Midland Regional Hospital in Mullingar, Co Westmeath.
