Armed police will not patrol Bristol's Christmas market

Armed officers will not patrol Bristol city centre's Christmas market, it has been confirmed.

Some police forces in the United Kingdom have decided to send armed police to Christmas markets to make shoppers feel safer, according to a report from the Mirror.

But Avon and Somerset police have no intention of doing the same at the Broadmead Christmas market, a spokesperson confirmed.

A force spokesperson for said: "Neighbourhood officers will be carrying out regular patrols and we encourage the public to speak to them if they have concerns or questions.

"However, there are no plans for armed officers to patrol the city centre at this time."

Armed police were seen at a vast Christmas market in Manchester city centre on November 12.

Greater Manchester Police said they were present "in order to ensure those attending the markets feel safe", and to encourage more people to get out and about.

Police insisted that the response was not to a specific threat.

Several firearm officers were spotted patrolling the stalls at a market in Piccadilly Gardens, with the public being encouraged to say hello or smile at them.
