Armed police swoop on teen with large knife used for his job

A teenager in Wirral got the shock of his life when he was surrounded by police and told an armed response unit was on the way.

The reason was that a member of the public had reported seeing a man wandering around with a large knife at Claremont Farm in Bebington.

Police raced to the scene and ordered the 18-year-old farm worker, named James, to put the knife down and back away from it.

But once the mix-up was explained to them and James's reason for having the knife verified, the incident was stood down.

Claremont Farm is a popular destination for visitors because of its restaurant and farm shop. It also allows people to pick their own strawberries, which has only just been relaunched after the Covid-19 lockdown.

The farm posted about the incident on its Facebook page yesterday, saying: "Unfortunately, someone at the farm mistook James carrying his knife for something more sinister.

"It's difficult, as on the farm we need knives, we don't want to have to hide them while working or that will look even more sketchy.

"Please, if you are coming to the farm be mindful of your whereabouts and what equipment our staff need to carry out their jobs.

"James is fine thank goodness and it didn't escalate... never a dull moment at Claremont Farm."

The post attracted hundreds of comments, with one saying: "We were driving past today when five police cars with their lights and sirens turned up! Hope he wasn't too shaken by it."
